AGU’s headquarters serves as a beacon for progress in achieving sustainability and embracing learning and collaboration. The American Geophysical Union sought to develop a headquarters that represented the organization’s mission. The commitment to sustainability was inherent in every part of the development of this project to work toward the goal of limiting the organizations environmental footprint. With LEED as a framework and zero as the goal, the project established aggressive goals that the green building industry and certainly the DC area had not yet tapped into. The project aimed to maximize the available resources in the existing condition to ingrain Reduction, Reclamation, Absorption, and Generation as the four main strategies. SBP supported these efforts by providing sustainability consulting and building commissioning for the duration of the project.
