Staples Mill Firehouse 20 is a 14,000 sf facility located in Henrico County, Virginia, east of the city of Richmond, and is pursuing LEED-NC Silver Certification based on its adherence to design and construction requirements across a variety of categories: site sustainability, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation. Staples Mill 20 is projecting to achieve a 40 percent water use reduction through the use of low-flow plumbing fixtures than it would if it had been built to minimum code standards. The building will feature low mercury lighting which will contribute to an estimated energy use savings of 22 percent. In addition, an estimated 75 percent of construction waste will be reused or recycled, minimizing the impact on area landfills.
